Sheffield Wednesday have signed Swansea City defender Ricardo Santos for an undisclosed fee on a one-year deal. The Owls, relegated to League One last season, have the option of a further 12 months on the 31-year-old's contract.

What happened?

Santos joined the Swans from Bolton last summer but only made one appearance for the Championship side. He made 172 league appearances in five seasons with Wanderers and won his first cap for Cape Verde last season.

Why it matters for Sheffield Wednesday

The signing is the club's first since being taken out of administration in May. Ricardo Santos told the club website, 'Once I got the call from my agent telling me that Sheffield Wednesday was a possibility, I told him, make sure you get this done.'

What comes next?

The Owls will be looking to strengthen their squad further as they prepare for the new League One season. Santos's experience will be valuable in their bid to return to the Championship.
