Harry Gray’s loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday continues with the full backing of parent club Leeds United, despite the teenager awaiting his first goal for the Owls. Former Leeds coach Mick Brown has addressed any early concerns, framing the 18-year-old’s adaptation period as a standard step for a young player.
Gray joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan during the summer window for his second taste of senior football, following a promising stint at Rotherham last season. At Rotherham, he scored three goals and provided one assist across 20 appearances, a spell that convinced Leeds he needed regular game time. His move to Hillsborough was designed to provide that, but breaking into a side in strong form has proven a challenge. He has made seven appearances for Wednesday, playing a total of 187 minutes without yet finding the net.
Sheffield Wednesday sit eighth in League One with 15 points from eight games and are unbeaten in their last five matches. Their recent fixtures have yielded a solid run of form, including a 2-2 draw at Huddersfield last time out. This competitive environment means opportunities must be earned. The team's next fixture is a home match against AFC Wimbledon this Saturday.
"I don't expect Leeds will have any real concerns about Gray's performances on loan," Mick Brown said. "I've watched a lot of Sheffield Wednesday this season and they have been excellent, so it's not easy for Gray at 18 just to walk into the starting XI every single week."
Brown, who has also worked at Manchester United, emphasised that dips are part of the process. He pointed out the inevitable comparisons to Gray’s brother, Archie Gray, who made an immediate impact at Leeds before his move to Tottenham. "Not every player is like his brother," Brown said. "Sometimes they need time to adapt and get used to the level they're playing at."
Leeds United remain committed to Gray’s long-term growth and are prepared to be patient. The club is keeping a close eye on his progress but will not rush any decisions about his future based on a short spell. Gray's 187 minutes of action are viewed as a foundation to build upon, with the club’s stance one of continued support.
With the team looking to close a four-point gap to the top of the standings, every player’s contribution is under scrutiny ahead of the Wimbledon match. Gray will be hoping to play a part as he aims to build on the experience gained at Rotherham and make his mark in Sheffield Wednesday's campaign.
