Alan Knill has left his role as Huddersfield Town assistant head coach after less than three months, a surprise development ahead of Sheffield Wednesday's key League One visit this weekend. The former Sheffield United stalwart informed the club of his decision to step away over the weekend for personal reasons.

Sheffield Wednesday, who sit fourth in the table with 14 points from seven games, travel to face third-placed Huddersfield on Saturday. The Owls are unbeaten in their last five matches, a run of three wins and two draws detailed on our standings page.

Club officials respond with respect

Huddersfield sporting director Chris Markham said the club respects Knill's decision and was glad to have had him. Markham described Knill as a warm presence at the Canalside training ground who conducted himself with utmost professionalism.

Assistant manager Martin Drury said he appreciated the chance to work alongside Knill, who was a popular figure with staff and players. Drury said the club understands and appreciates his personal reasons for stepping aside and wished him and his family well.

Knill's background and next steps

Knill joined Huddersfield in the summer after leaving Sheffield United, where he had served as assistant to Chris Wilder. The club said discussions will continue between Markham and Drury on how to proceed, with Jon Stead, Dale Tonge and Jon Worthington forming a strong remaining unit around Drury.

Markham noted the club is fortunate not to be rushed into an immediate decision and will follow a process to make the most informed choice for the team.
