Sheffield Wednesday have become the first team in English football league history to be relegated as early as February after losing at the home of city rivals Sheffield United. Wednesday were 2-0 down at half time at Bramall Lane after goals from Patrick Bamford and Harrison Burrows. In the second half, United's Kalvin Phillips was handed a red card before Wednesday's Charlie McNeill scored minutes later to keep the visitors in the game — something to cheer for the team's 2,300 supporters on an otherwise dark day in the club's history. Their second goal in 12 league outings was not enough to prevent defeat, however, as they failed to equalise and had Gabriel Otegbayo sent off in the ninetieth minute to leave both sides with ten men. Henrik Pedersen's side are on minus seven points after the 2-1 loss on Sunday after 33 games and are 41 points from safety with thirteen games left to play. Sunday's defeat was their 11th loss in a row, with their only win of the season coming against Portsmouth in September. Sheffield Wednesday were deducted a total of 18 points by the EFL for financial regulation breaches in the first half of the season, after filing for administration, with their former owner Dejphon Chansiri prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL club for a period of three years. They were initially deducted 12 points in October and the second points dock left them 27 points from safety after 18 matches. A consortium led by James Bord, owner of Scottish club Dunfermline Athletic, was named the preferred bidder to purchase the club in December. Victory for Sheffield United, meanwhile, kept alive their slim hopes of gatecrashing the play-offs, Chris Wilder's side now sitting six points behind Wrexham in sixth place.
